Belgium - Introduction
Tertiary education encompasses university education, non-university higher education organised in the
hautes écoles,
and artistic higher education organised in the art colleges and
architecture colleges. Tertiary education studies may be either
short-type (three or four years) or long-type (four or five years).
Both types are offered in the hautes écolesand art colleges, whereas
the universities and architecture colleges offer only long-type
studies. Long-type tertiary education closely resembles university
education in both character and level.
The mission of tertiary education as a whole includes the
provision of adult and continuing education and services to the
community, in particular, by collaborating with the education sector
(relations with secondary education) and with the social, economic, and
cultural spheres.
