04 - Greece - General Objectives
The University Sector of Higher Education aims to found, generate, develop science and technology
and to ensure top-level all-round, theoretical and applied training to the future scientists of Greece and
also to promote and develop scientific research.
The Technological Sector of higher education aims to develop scientific and technological research
and to provide curricula of a more applied orientation.
Higher Technological Education
The general objective in the courses of the Technological Education Institutions (TEI) and the Higher
School for Teachers of Technological Education (ΑΣΠΑΙΤΕ/ASPAITE) departments is first of all to
promote the development of applied and technological research and to offer to all students the
necessary knowledge so that they may acquire the qualifications necessary for successful
employment, in view of the rapidly developing technology and science and the increased needs of
economy and society for highly educated employees.
In comparison with Universities, studies at TEI are of a more applied nature. Nevertheless, care is
taken to ensure that curricula contain a sufficient number of background theoretical courses, so that
graduates are able to adjust easily to the ever-changing and increasing demands of scientific and
professional life owing to rapid advances in science and technology.
Higher University Education
The general objective of the courses in Panepistimio (University) departments is to provide a high level
of theoretical and all-round training to the country’s future professionals, scientists, academics and
artists.
Postgraduate Studies
The development, enhancement and establishment of organised Postgraduate Study Programmes
(Programma Metaptychiakon Spoudon - ΠΜΣ/PMS) that may lead to a Postgraduate Specialisation
Degree (Metaptychiako Diploma Eidikefsis - ΜΔΕ/MDE) and Doctoral Degree (Didaktoriko Diploma
–ΔΔ/DD) aim to deepen and develop basic research in various disciplines; increase the international
competitiveness of Greek universities by way of top-quality studies; provide the Greek economy and
society with competent experts specialising in various disciplines; and, in general, to contribute to the
