05 - Lithuania - Types of institution
Lithuania has a binary higher education system with two types of higher education institutions:
universities and colleges Kolegija.
Higher education institutions can be public (state-run) and private.
A higher education institution can establish and run sub-divisions necessary for its operation such as
faculties, departments, institutes, laboratories, production units and others.
University
The university is a higher education establishment where university-level studies prevail, and the
majority of students comprise those following university programmes, where research is carried out,
master and doctoral studies are organized and/or professional artistic creative activity of high level and
fine art postgraduate study programmes are developed. The status of university may be granted to a
higher education establishment which performs the above-mentioned functions even if its name does
not include the word "university".
Universities develop specialists to meet the needs of the State in the spheres of education, culture,
economy etc., who are self-motivated and capable of undertaking independent intellectual and creative
activities. Universities can offer non-university study programmes as well. More than half of the
university academic staff must be researchers and/or recognized artists.
At present, there are the following state-run universities in Lithuania: Kaunas University of Technology,
Klaipėda University, Lithuanian University of Agriculture, Šiauliai University, Vilnius Gediminas
Technical University, Vilnius Pedagogical University, Vilnius University, Vytautas Magnus University,
Kaunas University of Medicine, The General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania, Lithuanian
Academy of Music and Theatre, Mykolas Romeris University , Lithuanian Veterinary Academy, Vilnius
Academy of Fine Arts, Lithuanian Academy of Physical Education. Private establishments of higher
education include Vilnius Saint Joseph Catholic Seminary, Lithuanian Christian Found College, ISM
University of Management and Economics, Bishop Vincentas Borisevicius Seminary in Telšiai,
European Humanitarian University, International Business School at Vilnius University, and Vilnius
Academy of Business Law.
College
The college Kolegija is a higher education institution in which non-university studies prevail; it directs
its activities toward applied research and/or professional art.
Colleges train specialists-practitioners to meet the needs of the country in the economy, education,
culture and other sectors. College study programmes may include programmes (modules) that
correspond to the university undergraduate studies and are coordinated with universities. Colleges can
conclude agreements with universities concerning joint study and research programmes, academic
staff exchange programmes etc.
