14 - Norway - Progression of students
In most areas, students have to pass examinations in order to follow and complete a study
programme. For some courses, a certain level of knowledge and hence marks have to be met by the
student at each stage in order to proceed through the programme. Students may repeat examinations
they do not pass, maximum three times.
A system of inter-institutional credit transfer is regulated by law. Students receive full credit for their
previous studies if they move from one institution of higher education to another after completion of a
programme. It is therefore quite common to qualify for a degree on the basis of a combination of
courses taken at two different higher education institutions, e.g. at a university college and at a
university.
