18 - Norway - Organisational variations, alternative structures
There are no alternative structures in public higher education. However, alternatives in terms of
organisation and structure may be found at private higher education institutions.
The International Summer School (ISS) at the University of Oslo is a centre for learning in an
international context, offering a wide variety of courses taught in English at undergraduate and
graduate levels. Every year the ISS welcomes an average of 500 students who participate in its
activities from the last week of June until the first week of August. Students can choose from courses
in Norwegian language, Norwegian and Scandinavian literature, folklore, history, history of art, culture
and society, political science, international relations and economics. Graduate students and
professionals may take courses in special education, peace research, international development
studies, energy planning and the environment, media and communications and health planning. There
is no tuition fee.
