03 - Sweden - Specific legislative framework
The Higher Education Act (Högskolelagen) and the ordinances governing
higher education came into force in 1993. An appendix to the Higher
Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen) contains the Degree
ordinance (Examensordningen) laid down by the Government. It
stipulates the degrees that may be awarded in higher education and
their requirements.
Mainly as a result of the Bologna process, legislation for a three-cycle structure
of
higher education was adopted in January 2007 and applied since 1 July
2007. The new structure replaces the former system and is the only
structure for all higher education institutions (HEIs).
