13 - Sweden - Student assessment
Examination can be written and/or oral and is carried out within each
separate course i.e. evaluation is continuous. All general degrees
contain a dissertation corresponding to one term or half term’s studies
to be carried out individually or in a small group. A specially
appointed examiner determines dissertation grades. The normal
categories used in grading are fail (Icke Godkänd, IG), pass (Godkänd,
G) or pass with distinction (Väl Godkänd, VG), or a scale from one to
five where five is the highest grade.
There is no final examination; all grades attained for the different courses are included in the final degree certificate.
As
of autumn 2007, some universities and university colleges use the ECTS
scale, a seven point assessment scale. The introduction of the new
assessment scale is voluntary for institutions of higher education and
one step in the internationalisation of universities and university
colleges in the Bologna process.
