17 - England - Private education

There is only one private university, the University of Buckingham.

There are a small number of private higher education institutions with their own degree awarding powers but without university title. In 2007, for the first time, a profit-making private sector educational institution was awarded degree-awarding powers.

There are also some private institutions which have neither university title nor degree-awarding powers but which offer programmes leading to awards of other institutions.

These private institutions receive no direct government funding. However, students on designated courses may be eligible for financial help on the same basis as students in other institutions.
